The roughly triangular-shaped island province of Newfoundland also includes a mainland section located known as Labrador. A former colony of the United Kingdom, Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949.

The Avalon Peninsula, in the southeastern corner of the island of Newfoundland, is home to the capital city, St. John’s, near historically rich cod fishing grounds. There are many events to enjoy in St. John’s, such as the George Street Festival. It is a lively city with great pubs and friendly people. Visitors to the Avalon Peninsula may wish to visit Cape St Mary’s Ecological Reserve, a major nesting area for thousands of sea birds including Gannets, Kittiwakes and Murres.

At the tip of the Bonavista Peninsula, the town of Bonavista has a statue of famed explorer John Cabot and a replica of Cabot’s ship, the Matthew, which landed at Bonavista in 1497. Bonavista also has dramatic sea caves known as the “Dungeon.”

Along Newfoundland’s western side, visitor’s can drive north from Deer Lake on the Viking Trail, entering Gros Morne National Park. Gros Morne is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with breathtaking scenery, including freshwater fjords, forests, mountains and beaches.

The Viking Trail eventually leads to L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site at the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula. Here, dwellings built by the Vikings provide evidence of some of the first contact of Europeans with North America. At the community of St. Anthony, and along most of Newfoundland’s northern coast, one may have a chance to see Moose, Polar Bears, Whales and Icebergs.

The Soapstone Quarry National Historic Site in Fleur de Lys offers of glimpse into the history of aboriginal peoples known as the Dorset, who quarried soapstone at the site in ancient times.

Newfoundland is chock full of scenic wonders and fascinating historic sites, providing endless opportunity for photography and adventure.
