Big Tub Lighthouse near the town of Tobermory, Ontario was built in 1885 and marks the entrance to Big Tub Harbour in Lake Huron. Before the lighthouse was built, settlers to Tobermory would hang lanterns amongst the trees to help aid the ships in their journeys through the treacherous waters of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.
The original lighthouse was replaced by a 43 foot wooden tower that still overlooks the harbour today and the automated red light has replaced the lighthouse keepers which were once the sole providers in the upkeep of the lighthouse. Since 1985, a pathway has been cleared for tourists to walk to the rocky shores where Big Tub Lighthouse stands and scuba divers from around the world find this location the ideal place for underwater exploring.
