A cross monument stands in King's Square in downtown Saint John amongst many other important monuments, this one honoring the first settlers which represents the founding of New Brunswick. The monument was constructed in 1934 and was unveiled on the 150th anniversary of the founding of New Brunswick and has been named "The Loyalist Cross". Each monument or statue in the park is a representation of the powerful civic presence of the city.
King's Square in Saint John, New Brunswick was founded in 1784 but a plan for the area was not underway until 1844. Walkways, posts, a fountain, grass and some trees were put in, eventually leading to the flower beds, trees and shrubs in 1886. From 1908 onwards, monuments, bandstands, benches and sidewalks were continuously being added to King's Square until it became the symbolic heart of Saint John City which it is today.
