Eighteen bear statues are part of a collection known as the "Bears on Broadway" which were strategically placed on the grounds of the Manitoba Legislative Building in the City of Winnipeg. In the foreground, the pink Polar Bear with its umbrella is named "Bear Necessities" and refers to the need for food, shelter, water and clothing which every man requires.
The bear statues celebrate the 75th anniversary of CancerCare Manitoba which is why this Polar Bear holds on to a bottle of sunscreen to prevent skin cancer. There are approximately 62 seven foot tall Polar Bears in the entire collection which have been placed around Manitoba, 18 on the Legislative Building grounds, 7 at the Norquay Building and the rest having permanent places in good homes.
