Bears are the largest carnivores in North America. Though heavily built, they can run fast and are agile climbers. Bears are shy, solitary animals that usually avoid human contact. Bears can be attracted to food and garbage, which may bring about their demise: “A Fed Bear is a Dead Bear” as the saying goes.

Black Bears are typically black with a brownish muzzle. There are several other colour variants, including brown, cinnamon, and the rare white Kermode or “Spirit” Bear, found only in the Kermode Islands off the Pacific Coast. Polar Bears are denizens of the arctic ice, and have a long neck and large, powerful body. They are well adapted to their environment, with a thick layer of fat, and a dense cream-coloured fur coat.
