The coastline of the Hudson Bay in Churchill, Manitoba has not reached its maximum freezing point, only the edges of the shores have begun to freeze, leaving the polar bear to scour up and down for any food. While the Polar Bear waits patiently for his first Ringed Seal catch, he will forage for any scraps which will satisfy his appetite.
The Polar has an incredible sense of smell and even though there are no ice packs to venture onto in search of a Ringed Seal, he can easily pick up their scent. As the winter months freeze up the coastline of the Hudson Bay, there are plenty of Ringed Seals in the area which will quickly fatten up a Polar Bear in preparation for the warmer months ahead.
