Scattered across the sand dunes in Spirit Sands in Spruce Woods Provincial Park in Manitoba, Canada, bright pinkish/red wildflowers emerge from beneath the sand in the warmer months. These wildflowers are extremely hardy and can take a fair amount of abuse from the winds which sweep across the landscape, often changing the formation of the sand dunes.
The heat can be unbearable while hiking across the Spirit Sands during the summer months and these hardy flowers can begin to wilt on extremely hot days. Visitors to the Spirit Sands should always be prepared with the appropriate clothing, sun protection and the proper nourishment as people are apt to spend about three hours exploring the sand dunes.
